What is music therapy?
Music therapy is a systematic and evidence-based use of music interventions within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional. Music therapy goals are non-musical and may fall under the following domains:​

Because music therapy is a non-threatening medium, unique outcomes are possible. Research in music therapy supports the effectiveness of interventions in many areas such as movement and overall physical rehabilitation, increasing motivation to engage in treatment, providing emotional support for clients and their families, plus creating an outlet for expression of feelings.
Who is a candidate for music therapy?
Music therapy is for children, adolescents, and adults who have mental health needs, developmental and learning disabilities, substance abuse issues, brain injuries, physical disabilities, acute and chronic pain, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, plus hospice and palliative care.

Music therapy sessions include:
Through musical involvement in the therapeutic context, abilities are strengthened and transferred to other areas in order to accomplish the therapeutic goal. Music therapy sessions can be 30, 40, or 60 minutes in length. Session length is determined by the client's needs and the therapist's recommendation. Sessions are designed and music selected based on the individual treatment plan.

Next, two sessions will be scheduled to conduct an assessment. The purpose of the assessment will be to determine the strengths and needs of each client and whether the client is a candidate for music therapy.

Following the assessment, a post-consultation will be conducted to review the assessment findings and to discuss possible treatment plans.
